Shop guide
A GRIT Gate Control bolts onto a standard metal blast gate you already have. It comes in five sizes: 2.5, 3, 4, 5, and 6 inch. The whole job on this page is getting the right one for each gate in your shop.
Size the Gate Control to the gate, not the pipe
Each Gate Control is made for one gate diameter. The arm, the screws, and the slide guides in the box are sized for that diameter. So measure the gate itself.
- Write down the size stamped on or measured at each gate you want to automate.
- Count how many gates you have at each size. The System Builder asks for exactly that.
- Check that each slide moves freely by hand. A gate that binds is a gate an actuator will fight.
One GRIT Power Bank runs up to ten Gate Controls on a shared 12V low-voltage run, so the count also tells you how much power you need.
Standard metal gates only
GRIT does not make or sell blast gates. The Gate Control is built for standard metal blast gates, and that is the gate body it bolts to.
If your shop needs metal gates or duct due to code guidance or an insurer, choose the gate and duct that meet your requirement. The Gate Control bolts to the metal gate body and does not change the shop decision.
Already have plastic iVAC-style automated gates? Those take the iVAC Retrofit Gate Control (GH-GC4001), not a standard Gate Control. Do not mix the two. Background: automated blast gates.
5 inch duct meeting a 6 inch gate
This comes up when a collector outlet, a tool port, and the duct do not share one size. The Gate Control follows the gate. A 6 inch gate gets a 6 inch Gate Control, whatever size pipe feeds it.
To join 5 inch duct to a 6 inch gate, buy a 6 to 5 inch reducer, same as any duct job. Then put a 6 inch Gate Control on the 6 inch gate.
If your run mixes sizes at every turn, fix the layout before you automate. See small shop dust collection setup and flex hose vs hard duct.
The gate did not come with flanges
The GRIT Gate Control fits standard, run-of-the-mill metal blast gates. It bolts onto the gate body with the bracket and arm in its box. How the gate joins your duct is up to the gate and the duct, not the Gate Control.
If you are not sure your gate is a fit, start with compatible blast gates, and the support page lets a person confirm the gate before you order. If you already have automation, see how to tell if a blast gate is open.
Before you order
- Gate size for every branch you want to automate (2.5, 3, 4, 5, or 6 inch).
- Metal gate body, or an existing plastic iVAC-style gate.
- The slide moves freely.
- A place for the 12V Power Bank near the gate run.
Enter it in the System Builder. The wrong gate size is an expensive return.
